MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — On Thursday, some cities in the Twin Cities metro area will be holding flash mobs, a creative way to help people get moving and be more active.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is behind the Do Town initiative, which their website calls “a unique collaboration among the cities of Bloomington, Edina, and Richfield … to improve the health of our communities.”

Natalie Kane spoke with Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Katherine Bass Thursday morning about the event. Bass said the Do Town movement is intended as a way to remind people that the healthy choice can also be the easy choice.

Bass suggested a few tips to stay healthy, which included packing your lunch every day, eating more fresh vegetables by growing them yourself, and having walking meetings at the office.

Organizers hope to show people how staying active and healthy can also be fun, which is where the flash mobs come in. They’re timed on the eve of one of the most prominent athletic events of the year.

“You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to live a healthy lifestyle,” said Ross.

The events are scheduled to take place at the Mall of America Rotunda at 11 a.m. and at the Richfield Lunds and Byerly’s at 1:45 p.m.
